1. Fluid and Fashionable

Effortless design with fluid style that has no beginning and no end. This trend allows for your eyes to coast along the space without seeing a crisp defined transition with style or color. By incorporating elements of this trend you’ll create a calming effect that immerses you into a space of repetitive shapes and colors.

  • Colors: Dark Green, White, Stone Gray, Dark Teal, Ocean Blue
  • Patterns: Repetitive shapes or shapeless, fluid transitions (i.e. ombré, watercolor)
  • Vibe: Tranquil yet exciting, loose, serene, clean
  • Overall Style: Transitional meets timeless

Designer Tip: For this trend, it’s best to focus more on various shades of the same color. Much like you would see on one strip of a paint deck.

Paint Projects: Create an ombré accent wall using the same base color in a few different shades. Dilute your paints heavily with water (be sure to use a water-based paint). Loosely drag your brush working from top to bottom to catch the drips and intensify your color as you work your way down. This can also be done with one color, by varying the amount of water added as you create your ombré effect.

2. Natural and Organic

The Natural and Organic décor trend celebrates the freedom of expression and artistic creations all while showing the complexity of life. This trend is about textures and tones with a palette that derived from nature.

  • Colors: Terra Cotta, Henna, Ivory, Moss Green, Mustard
  • Patterns: Patina, batik, woven
  • Vibe: Explorative, worldy, impactfully muted
  • Overall Style: Boho chic and casual cool

Designer Tip: This trend is less about bold accents and more about incorporating layers of textures and natural earthy hues. For example, the luscious rich hue of mustard works well against a natural raw jute, a terra cotta clay, or try it against a gorgeous green grass color.

Paint Projects: Tape off terra cotta planters for a bold accent on your everyday planter OR Transform the feel of your room to be soft and tranquil by painting your baseboards ivory instead of the traditional bright white.

3. Luxe Modern

The concept behind this popular and growing trend is introducing a powerful man-made design statement using metal. Long gone are the matchy-matchy days of keeping everything one specific metal like stainless steel or brass. The hot trend for 2019 is to mix and match your metals and mediums.

  • Colors: Bronze, Rose Gold, Matte Gold, Pewter, Iron
  • Patterns: Metal is incredible rigid and durable yet has the capability to mold into any shape you desire. Geometric shapes for hardware and wall applications are what we are seeing pop up everywhere these days.
  • Vibe: striking, unique juxtaposition, bold statement
  • Overall Style: Modern glam and minimalist with a bold statement

Designer Tip: When mixing metals, create a palette the same way you would if you were mixing various colors in a room. Ideally, stick with 2-4 metal tones that are distributed in a way that is balanced and intentional.

Paint Projects: With plenty of options in metallic paints available, a simple random geometric shape taped off on a wall in a select few spots and then painted with a metallic finish paint can add some serious ‘WOW’ to your room.

4. Feminine and Free

The Feminine and Free trend captures a soothing, soft ethereal feel and embraces a pastel palette. Sometimes the smallest statements are the biggest ones, and this trend is like a design whisper in your home. Top this trend off with living greenery for added freshness and life.

  • Colors: Blush, Pale Blue, Cream, Taupe, Soft Teal
  • Patterns: Layers of shapes overlapping one another.
  • Vibe: Soft, flowing, light, ethereal, whisper
  • Overall Style: Romantic and farmhouse glam

Designer Tip: Use a favorite painting, a photo from your beach vacation, or even a favorite outfit as an inspiration source for your design. This allows you to choose the right colors and see how they look together. You can even try to keep it at the same scale (i.e. mostly pink with subtle pops of ivory and a touch of gray)

Paint Projects: Use different finishes in your paint colors to create more depth. For example, when painting stripes, use an eggshell finish and a satin finish of the same color to show a subtle difference in the pattern.

5. Eclectic and Bold

This trend is about power, making a statement, no fear and bold choices. Own your style and show it off.

  • Colors: Fire Red, Bold Orange, Cobalt Blue, Smokey Gray, White
  • Patterns: Stripes, triangles
  • Vibe: Dramatic, show stopping, Wow moment
  • Overall Style: Eclectic and Avant Guard

Designer Tip: A great way to add beautiful contrast when using bold colors is to contrast it against a color on the opposite side of the color wheel. Blues with Orange, Reds with Green, etc.

Paint Projects: Paint a door or even a ceiling in a bright accent color that will stop people in their tracks. Sometimes all it takes is one bold accent piece to make a bold statement in your space.
