A Patio Makeover with Mediterranean Flair
Sarah Beckler, from @thebecklerabode, adds character to her covered outdoor patio by painting a checkerboard floor and incorporating textured walls to create a Mediterranean-inspired oasis.
Toya Cheri, from @shemoveswithpurpose, preforms a modern Mediterranean makeover for a staircase landing, featuring a custom wood arch with terracotta tile, limewashed walls, classic trim and antique-inspired lighting.
Supplies Needed:
Create the Arch Frame
To start off, cut the arch, two legs and the base from the MDF sheet. Measure your accent wall’s dimensions, then use a circular saw and saw guide to cut the MDF sheet to match the wall’s height and width.
Next, find the center of the MDF sheet and screw in a wood screw. Be sure to determine the radius of the arch.
Next, attach a string to a pencil and the other end to the screw. Adjust the string to the desired radius and draw the arch curve. Use a jigsaw to cut the arch and legs. Measure the distance between the legs and use the jigsaw to cut the base.
Attach the Arch Frame to the Drywall
Use a stud finder to locate wall studs. Mark these on the MDF arch and drill pilot holes. Then, attach the frame using construction adhesive and wood screws. Fill the screw holes with stainable wood filler.
Attach the Arch Trim to the Arch Frame
Attach one 1x4 to the inside edge of one leg using construction adhesive and 1.5 in brad nails. Repeat for the other leg.
Cut two 1 in x 4.5 in MDF pieces for decorative trim backing and nail them above the 1x4s.
Cut the flexible arch trim to fit the curve and attach it with construction adhesive and brad nails. Fill nail holes with stainable wood filler.
Then, tape off the surrounding drywall with FrogTape Advanced™ Painter's Tape.
Install PVC Wall Molding
Plan molding placement using a wainscoting calculator and visually map it out using FrogTape® Multi-Surface Painter’s Tape. Cut the molding with a miter saw and install with 1.5 in brad nails. Then, fill holes with spackle and caulk seams with silicone caulk.
Protect the Banister and Stairs
Use FrogTape® Advanced Painter’s Tape and drop cloths to cover your banister and stairs before painting.
Paint the Walls
Prime walls with limewash primer to achieve true color and texture. Apply two coats of limewash paint with a brush.
Prime and Stain the Arch Wall
After the limewash dries, replace green painter's tape with FrogTape® Delicate Surface Tape around the arch frame. Prime only the MDF arch frame with tan paint or tan-tinted primer. Apply gel stain using a sponge or cheesecloth.
Cut and Stain the Wood Wall Molding
Measure and cut the wood wall molding that will border the arch wall. Also cut two 1 in x 4.5 in pieces of trim to cover the MDF pieces above the 1x4s. Stain them all to match the arch frame and install using 1.5 in brad nails.
Install the Tile Wall
Apply tile adhesive to the inside of the arch frame. Start tiling from the bottom. When tiling near the top, use the tile adhesive paper as a template to trace the curve of the arch. Cut tiles with a wet saw to fit the arch. If using tile trim, apply it from the bottom up along the inside edge of the arch frame. Measure and cut the center trim piece to fit the top curve.
Grout and Caulk Tile
Grout the tile using a grout float. Wipe off excess grout with a damp sponge, then use a wet microfiber or cheesecloth to remove any haze. Apply grout caulk as needed for clean edges.
Peel Off Tape and Clean Up
Remove all tape and drop cloths. Clean up any limewash residue from the stairs. Step back and admire your Mediterranean-inspired transformation!
