Here are five science-backed tips to make your painting projects look like they were done by a pro.
Lauren Makk, from @laurenmakk, transformed a tiny powder bathroom into a show-stopping statement of maximalist metallic glam. Lauren packed this small space with big personality and luxurious detail. Her design features hand-carved textures, hand-painted mixed metallics and custom-cut wallpaper panels.
Supplies Needed
Map Out Design
Use FrogTape® Multi-Surface Painter’s Tape to define your design on the wall. Lauren created large triangular shapes that intertwined to give a dramatic look.
Add Texture
Apply a thick 0.5 in. layer of drywall compound to your designs and create texture using a grooved clay scraper or tiling trowel. Remember, this is your design, so have fun!
Add Layers
Lauren wanted her mural to have layers. Once the first set of designs had dried, she used FrogTape® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape to create additional triangular shapes between them. She also added some waves and circles.
Peel & Reveal
Peel off your painter's tape and give yourself a pat on the back for your hard work! You’re halfway through!
Adding Some Gold
Lauren suited up in her PPE painter's mask and grabbed some gold metallic spray paint. She applied it to the ceiling and the textured elements on the walls. There was no need to worry about overspray on this first paint step.
Make It Dazzle
Next, use FrogTape® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape to define the relief areas of the design. Next, Lauren gave it a spritz of gold spray paint.
Antique Aspects
Water down a leftover paint sample and dab it across the walls, letting it soak into the cracks and crevices. Then use a damp, lint-free rag to wick away any excess or drips.
A word of advice: Vary the amount of brown paint on different sections so no two areas look exactly alike. This decision gave the metallic paint an opportunity to shine through in a natural way!
Cut Out Your Cranes
Cut each bird or custom shape out by hand and position them on the wall using FrogTape® Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape. This way, you can adjust your design as it unfolds without removing any of your hard work underneath.
Final Spritz
Protect your spray area with a disposable drop cloth. Give the back of each bird a generous spritz of heavy-duty spray adhesive and permanently place your flock on your walls. Now, step back and admire your hard work!
