Installing deck and joist flashing tape is an essential step when protecting your deck from moisture damage. The right flashing tape creates a durable, waterproof seal that helps shield vulnerable areas from the elements year-round. FrogTape™ Pro Grade Deck and Joist Flashing Tape delivers reliable protection with an acrylic adhesive that allows for easy repositioning during installation before forming a strong, secure bond when pressure is applied.
The best part? Joist tape installation is easy with FrogTape Pro Grade Deck and Joist Flashing Tape in just a few steps. See below for a step-by-step guide to learn how to apply joist for long-lasting deck protection.
Step One: Preparing to Wrap Tape
Before applying the tape, make sure the surface is clean and free of dirt, dust and debris. A clean surface helps the adhesive bond properly, creating a secure hold once pressure is applied. If you're wrapping joists or working with longer sections of tape, having a second person assist may make the installation process easier and more efficient.
Step Two: Apply the Tape
The application method will vary based on the area you are taping. Follow the instructions below based on your project needs.
Taping a Ledger Board
Start at one corner of the ledger board, placing the tape along the 1.5-inch-wide top edge. If the tape isn't positioned exactly where you want it on the first try, don't worry because FrogTape Pro Grade Deck and Joist Flashing Tape features an acrylic adhesive that allows for repositioning during initial application.
Once the tape is properly aligned, apply firm pressure along the top edge to secure it. Continue pulling the tape across the full length of the ledger board. Cut the tape to the desired length and trim any excess material as needed.
Taping a Deck Post
Wrap the tape around the bottom end of the post, covering all four sides. Ensure the tape extends at least 6 inches up from the bottom of the post to help protect against moisture intrusion.
Taping the End of a Joist
Wrap the flashing tape around both ends of the joist, leaving the bottom surface uncovered. Select a tape width that fully covers the joist end within the joist hanger area for complete protection.
Taping the Top of a Joist
Begin by overlapping the tape onto the taped end of the joist. Pull the tape along the full length of the joist, keeping it centered on the top surface. At the opposite end, overlap the tape onto the taped end to create continuous protection.
Step Three: Add Pressure & Finalize
Once the tape has been applied, go back over the entire surface with firm pressure to activate the adhesive and create a smooth, secure bond. Check for any wrinkles, bubbles or lifted edges, and smooth them out as needed. When properly activated, the pressure-sensitive adhesive forms a strong, long-lasting seal.
FrogTape Pro Grade Deck and Joist Flashing Tape is designed for fast and easy installation. It conforms securely around edges, corners, nails and screws and adheres to pressure-treated wood and a variety of other surfaces.
